I am a college graduate that spent the last several years working for non-profits along with my wife.  At the height of our careers in this field we earned a grand total of $12.00 an hour each.
Our clothes come from discount bins and thrift stores, our cars are used and our luxuries are minimal.  We subscribe to neither a cell phone plan nor Cable TV.
My wife and I both lost our jobs over a year ago.  Non-profits have cut their hiring and operate on shoestring budgets.  I have had 6 interviews after sending out over 200 resumes this past year.  Not a single job offer is in sight.
We have had excellent credit and never gone into debt for anything other than student loans and a mortgage…  We have “played the game”.
We are walking a razor’s edge right now; on one side we have endless debt and the other, destitution.
If people who have dedicated their lives and careers to helping others end up in this situation, who’s going to be left to help the even less fortunate?
